We will take the South Pan-American Highway and begin the ascent toward the great "Iztaru." The winding road will lead us through fertile lands, cultivated with all kinds of vegetables and greens.
At the summit of the volcano, you will be able to observe the main craters known as Irazú, Playa Hermosa, and Diego de la Haya.
This colossus is the highest volcano in the territory at 3,432 meters (11,000 feet) above sea level. Its last eruptive phase took place between 1963 and 1965, with heavy gas and ash emissions that were felt throughout the country. On a clear day, both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans can be observed.
After the visit to the volcano, we will descend toward the city of Cartago, the former capital of Costa Rica established in 1563 by the conquistador Juan Vázquez de Coronado. There, we will make a stop at the Basilica of the Virgin of the Angels, a place of pilgrimage for many believers and a tradition that has remained active since 1635.
The next stop is the Lankester Botanical Garden, a research center of the University of Costa Rica, created for the protection and preservation of more than 800 species of orchids, as well as other plant species. A guided tour will be conducted here, exploring different sections such as bromeliads, cacti, heliconias, and palms, among others.
Next, we will continue toward the wonderful and scenic Orosi Valley, surrounded by beautiful mountains and a diversity of crops such as coffee and sugar cane, among others. This was an important settlement during the colonial era, witnessing various historical events including pirate attacks, earthquakes, and floods, as well as the significance of the Franciscan orders entrusted with the evangelization process and pioneering the construction of the country's first Catholic temples. On this tour, we will visit one of the few colonial churches still standing, followed by a delicious traditional lunch at the best restaurant in the area.
And for the perfect finale, before returning to San José, we will enjoy a wonderful and delicious buffet dinner at the Tabacón Resort.
